Artist Statement & CV
Born 1980 West Yorkshire, UK.
Between September 2005 and 2008, I engaged with a series of residencies in
Greenland, Iceland, Cyprus, Norway, Spain and The Netherlands in order to begin
exploring and developing my painting practice. These experiences directed
my ideas towards transforming the subjects encountered on my travels in order to
articulate what interests me about human nature and the inherent struggle
between the mind and the physical external environment. I am continuously
returning to museum exhibits, dioramas, theatre sets, shop displays and other
methods of creating fabricated environments that may ask questions about how
people coexist with the landscapes they inhabit and the hidden complexities
surrounding the notions of place and habitat. It is important to me that paint
can reveal or arouse a particular element within the different subjects I use;
from the physical process of creating layers that form narratives between paint
and image, and how gestures found in everyday scenes can be isolated, slowed
down and opened up to different interpretations of stories.
I am currently working on new paintings and drawings in my studio in Leeds (UK)
and will continue to engage with more residencies in the near future.
I am also writing music and performing in a band called The Horn The Hunt (see links).
